The Old Standby

First of all, let me wish everyone a Happy Earth Day.

Some photo locations are like a Ferrari.  They are the cream of the crop, the one that everyone dreams about.  This could include places like Yosemite, the Grand Canyon, or Yellowstone.  Three locations that I've never been to.

Other photo locations are more like a 4x4 in the winter.  They might not be the the prettiest, but they are dependable.  This is where my "old standby" comes in.

The "old standby" in my case is a place called Doane's Falls.  This waterfall isn't on anyone's bucket list of places to visit before they die, but it is a very photo friendly location.

There are a few reasons I refer to Doane's Falls as the "old standby."  First, when I don't have time to go exploring new locations or head north to the mountains, I go to this waterfall just to get out with my camera.  Second, I know this area quite well which allows me to try new techniques with my camera.  Third, I can get to this waterfall rather quickly and take pictures during any season.  And fourth, it allows me to get outdoors and enjoy my favorite photo subject...waterfalls.

I'm sure most everyone has their own version of the "old standby."  It doesn't have to be a waterfall.  It could be a park, a city skyline, or even something in your own backyard.  Whatever it is, like my "old standby", it's going to be someplace you consider photographically pleasing, a place that is reliable, and a place you enjoy going to over and over.

If for some reason you don't have your own "old standby", do some exploring in the area where you live and find a place that you find pleasing, beautiful, and peaceful.  You'll find that makes for an enjoyable photo experience and you'll want to continue to visit.  Once you have taken all of the standard shots (like the view of Doane's Falls that I have shown here), you'll then be forced to find new points of view, which in turn will only help to make you a better photographer.

Until next time.
